Local Plumber points out problems with downtown project
Permalink

John Mazzeo a local liscensed plumber was critical of the sewer portion of the downtown sidewalk project at the 2/26 town council meeting. He pointed out that the project started on 2/12 without any permits being applied for. Without the proper permits in place, Code enforcement Officer John Aloisio was unaware of the project starting and therefore no inspections of the work were being completed. The State also requires that the portion of the work entering into each building be done by a liscensed plumber, which is not the case with the contractor doing the work. Upon closer inspection it was also discovered that the pipe being used was not up to code and was illegal in this type of project. All of the sewer laterals that were placed had to be removed and replaced with the proper pipe, a cost that will probably be passed on to the taxpayers since the specs for the project were not correct. Mr. Mazzeo also raised questions about the responsibility for paying for the sewer hookups going into the businesses on Bellevue. Normally the property owner is resposible for the cost of a hookup from the curb to the property, in this case the Town is paying for the hookups which means the cost is being absorbed by the taxpayers of Hammonton, specifically the sewer users. Mr. Mazzeo could not understand why he and every other sewer user is paying for these private hookups.

Councilman Bertino explained in the meeting that the reason he had setup the downtown sidewalk project this way was because he did not want to have to have merchants tear up brand new concrete in a year or two if their old sewer lines had a problem.

The sewer lines are currently okay. Bertino mandated that all the lines had to be replaced in order to make sure they were all new and working so that these sidewalks would last for 30-40 years.

It is disgusting the Jim MacLane attack the logic Jimmy Bertino used just for political gain.

What did I attack, all I did was repeat what someone else said at the meeting. This is up on this blog for people to discuss and offer their own opinions. Stop whining, I get enough of that from my 6 year old daughter.

John mazzeo is just crying sour grapes.   Arh screwed this up not m + c.  But john aloiso brought it to there attention and the permits are now pulled and moving forward. As far as the taxpayers paying.  Well it is to beautify downtown and help make our town look better.  Key words being our town!So yes some the down town people get a free water and sewer line big deal.  The ass of a plumber doesn’t care that our tax dollars are giving the downtown owners free brick pavers sidewalks.  Hey it's down town and we got a grant for it.  I am surprised mazzeo !

It looks like Jim MacLane and Mazzeo want to attack Jimmy Bertino and Loretta Rehmann.

This must be a vendetta that MacLane has...

Maybe the plumber does not care about pavers because he is a plumber , if something is wrong with pavers maybe one of our excellent mason professionals could help out. Everyone should stick to what they do best and Mr.Mazzeo is a fine plumber, don't be rude and take that from him.

This attack on Jimmy Bertino and ARH (Loretta Rehmann) seems very unfair.

Maybe people are not as dumb as you think you keep bringing up Jimmy and Lorretta maybe that is how you would like to have people see it, it not how the majority sees it. But I guess if you keep saying it all your personalities will believe it .

That's right. People can see right thru this attack on Jimmy Bertino and Lorrettta Rehmann and know that it is nonsense the Democrats are trying to bring up.

When you have nothing to say you really do say nothing don't you!!!! As I said before and will say again, I have not said a word about this issue, I have not said anything about Jim Bertino or Mrs. Rehmann. The only posts I even have on here are the original one starting the discussion and one where I explained this before. You just keep bashing and attacking and slinging mud over and over and over hoping that someone might believe you. Well I hope you now realize that all you are doing is digging yourself deeper. Everyone sees through your deception and despises you for it. Please stop bashing me. Leave my family out of it. Leave my coworkers out of it. Leave me alone. PLEASE!!!

If you are so interested in something that does not concern you why do you not put your name to your question, and act the big person you think you are in your own mind and be responsible for what you print Better yet why don't you stop Mr. or Mrs.Mazzeo or the Chief and ask . Why because you do not have what it takes to do that but than again I already heard that.

The Atlantic City Press ran a story today (3/2) about the problems John Mazzeo pointed out with the downtown sidewalk project. Some of his concerns were that the wrong pipe was used. The pipe they were using had thinner walls than code called for. These sewer connections are being replaced to prevent any failures that would cause the new sidewalk to be torn up for repairs. Well, it seems the very thing that was trying to be prevented may have been caused by these mistakes, because the code is written so that the pipe will be strong enough to handle the weight and pressure where it is buried. Pipe of lesser strength could possible break and crack from the pressure.

Of even more concern is Councilman Wuillermin's response to these mistakes. “I don't really believe it is a major issue. I think it needs to be dealt with, but I think it's a tempest in a teapot,” Wuillermin said. “If I really thought there was any jeopardy to the public's health and safety, I wouldn't take that tone."
Let's hope we don't take such a laid back approach to the Town Hall project.

This is really becoming a circus.

Every project Hammonton First has begun has been filled with neglect, ignorance, and arrogance.

We are going to need some real leaders in town to fix all these problems in November.

Well said.
Hammonton First has been so busy patting themselves on the back for things they haven't done, they don't know what they are doing.

Asbestos coverups, planned misuse of grant money, no permit work, sub-par pipes, and a Historical Society Building that is an eye sore.

I can't wait until we get them out of council for good!!!!!!

HF has an excuse for all their mistakes.  The old town hall asbestos coverup and non-qualified contractors, the new town hall -digging in the wrong spot, downtown revitalization-wrong size pipeand non-qualified contractors.  What kind of building are we going to get once the new town hall is constructed?  How much more can they possibly mess up.  They still have to knock down the current town hall-let me guess a non-qualifed contractor will do demolition.  For a party repeatedly saying they've done more in 1 year then any other party; I say to them please don't do anything else- You're hurting Hammonton.  Don't they understand that their party and actions are tearing this town apart.

In addition, it was explained that the Town had to dig out old residential foundations which had been paved over when the current Town Hall was built. Those foundations have been removed and ground compaction tests were done to show a solid footing is available.

It seems the Democrats want to attack Jimmy Bertino now. They should try for reliable data. Also, why have they nothing positive to say about their own candidates?

The Democrats have said nothing and are attacking no one about this project. We reported on this blog the information provided by Mr. Mazzeo and allowed discussion by the residents of Hammonton. Don't put words into our mouths. We agree with Mr. Bertino's stance that the sewer laterals be replaced, it only makes sense so that we do not have to dig up brand new sidewalks. But we do not condone substandard pipes being used, unliscensed workers doing the installations, or work being done without the proper permits in place.

And as for saying something positive about our candidates, I'm sure you know that we will once that decision is made and announced.
