On the agenda for the 3/17 council meeting is an Ordinance amending the trash pickup ordinance for our town. One of the most notable changes is the addition of the words "bagged in bio-degradable bags" in the section referring to leaves. Most of the residents in our town, except for those living on Bellevue Avenue, have enjoyed for years the leaf pickup service that our town has provided. Residents would move the leaves to the curbline and the town would use vacuum trucks to pick them up. Now all residents will be required to bag all of their leaves. Other changes include the bagging in bio-degradable bags of grass clippings and hedge trimmings, the homeowner being responsible for the replacement of the town provided trash toter, the town will no longer pickup any refrigerant item (i.e. air conditioner, refrigerator, etc.).
This is just another cut to the services provided by the town that our taxes have paid for for many years. At what point do the cuts in services stop?
I got an idea. Why don't we just give the Donio Family money 4 times a year. Since they are getting the benefit of our dollars and we are receiving no services, let's eliminate the middle man.
I think it is time that Hammontonians wake up. Stop reading the Gazette. Stop supporting the Donios' Stooges on Town Council.

Aren't driving over wet leaves dangerous? Wouldn't putting leaves in biodegradable bags be safer?
Instead of stopping the leaf pickup all together, why not change the ordinance to require leaves to be left on the grass strip between the curb and sidewalk and then do a better job of scheduling pickup.

In addition to being safer, it will prevent leaves from blowing all over the place when it is windy in the fall. This makes the job much easier for our highway department. It helps support their work to keep our town clean and safe.
But it is still a service that the town has provided for years that we are now eliminating. It has not been a safety issue before, why now? If we schedule more efficient pickups the blowing becomes a very small problem. And I am not sure it becomes easier for the highway department. Instead of one driver and an operator for the vacuum, we will now have to schedule enough people to pick up all of the bags, which can get pretty heavy especially if the leaves get wet, and carry them to a truck and place them in. Then at the other end, instead of just dumping the container into a mulching area, the highway workers will now have to unload the truck by hand and empty each and every bag into the mulch area. It seems a lot more labor intensive to me.
"We've always done it that way" is not a good reason to keep doing something that is not safe and wastes money. Leaves blow all over the neighborhoods and it's a problem every year. Putting them in biodegradable bags is also being nice to your neighbors. After they clean up their lawns is if fair for leaves to blow back on them and all over the street?
Did you miss the part where I mentioned better and more efficient scheduling. Instead of dropping the service we have always provided, maybe we could just look for ways to do it better!!!!
How do you schedule the wind? If people just throw their leaves into the street or on the sidewalks, they blow all over. It rains. Wet leaves are not safe to drive on. Putting them in a bag is easier to pickup and safer.
There will still be leaf pickup by the town.People will put their leaves in biodegradable bags for pickup. This is normal for many, many towns. Leaves don't blow around into the street and into neighbor's yards. It is safer and cleaner. What is wrong with being safer and cleaner along with the taxpayer's saving money?

So how many fatalitites have their been in Hammonton because of leaf piles? Why don't you move to Winslow where your business is and leave this town alone?
The Town would save plenty if we had never built that stupid building that doesn't fit on the lot and provided services to the Donio's and DiDonato's for free.
Its a sad day for Hammonton when you pay the same in taxes and get less in services. The question now becomes what do we get for our taxes? Why not get rid of the workers in town hall too. And why do the mayor and council people take their pay? They should serve for free. This HF has surley screwed up the town.

interesting how the dems try to say that the town isn't picking up leaves when all that is happening is people will be putting leaves in bags for the town to pickup
The Dems have not said there will not be leaf pickup, we have said that there is no curbside leaf pickup. Now the public will not be able to move the leaves to the curb for the town to pick up with their vacuum truck. People will either have to pay a landscaper to pick up and bag the leaves for them, which will cost the taxpayer more money (an indirect tax) or they will have to spend a greater amount of their own time bagging these leaves in biodegradable bags which will cost more in both money and time away from other projects or their family. Either way the cost is being passed on to the taxpayer. Any way you look at it the cost to the taxpayer has gone up, so there can not be a claim of taxes remaining level, the cost for the services our taxes have provided for years has gone up.
leaves will be picked up at the curb in biodegradable bags dems don't want to admit to all the problems caused by corzine they have no solutions--- the dems just raise taxes
The solution to the town's problems is not raising taxes. That is the easy way out. Our current council does not have the foresight to run our government effectively. Hammonton First obviously think there are only two solutions to running our government. You either have to reduce services to keep taxes level, or you have to raise taxes. They don't have the vision for finding new recurring sources of revenue for our town. They don't understand that controlled growth will ease the burden on the taxpayers and keep taxes from going up. They don't understand that eliminating debt frees up money to be used today instead of paying for things we bought many years ago. They ignore the fact that our debt uses up a large portion of our budget in interest charges, money we are putting out for absolutely nothing in return. They can't see that sharing services with the school district, other municipalities, the county, and the state can reduce our costs dramatically. They think the only area of our town worth promoting is the downtown and they have ignored the rest of town where we could be attracting a multitude of tax ratables to increase revenue. They have just built a brand new building without incorporating green technology that could reduce our ongoing costs. They don't realize that cutting the town's services makes this community less desirable to live in which reduces the possibility for new ratables and may actually reduce revenue by people leaving for other communities causing the rest of us to pay higher taxes. This is the easiest way to run government, but not the right way. The right way is to do the hard work to make all of the above things happen. The Democrats are willing to do the hard work to fix our financial woes. The Democrats are the ones with a plan that will control taxes but get our town moving again.
The people who responded to the Hammonton News question asked for "across-the-board departmental cuts". In another poll 80% of the respondents did not want to see cuts in services if taxes do not go down. It seems that the people are looking for better efficiency from our government. They feel that the town can provide the services we have had for years with better efficiency and lower costs. But the respondents did not want to see reduced services for the same taxes.
how much did the new town hall cost taxpayers? i would rather have my leaves picked up then give new offices to the mayor and his buddies.
i used to think it was agood thing since the police got new HQ's, but they want to get rid of the cops too, so now I'm left with no leaf pickup and a fancy building for Prince John and his Merry Makers to steal my taxes.
Maybe seniors can buy them (leaf bags) online! Now that's a classic Firster statement. Has anyone ever seen Petrongolo in Wal-mart?
Watching her at a council meeting makes Jerry Vitalo look like a high school grad. Tracey doesn't even know what to do if they don't tell her. I guess shes just present.Wheres' the Hammonton Rag on this, if it was a Republican or a Democrat it would be a cartoon and the headlines. One would hope that the firsters explain to tracey what to do if she has to think on her own.Beam me up scotti, yes shes' one of Hammontons best.

I think she was very uncomfortable about eliminating the Hammonton Police. I guess at least on this issue she sees that Hammonton First is way out of the box, circle, and triangle.
