Could Kessler become a VA hospital?

Democratic State Senator Jeff VanDrew along with Democratic Assemblymen Nelson Albano and Matt Milam are working with Democratic US Senators Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez on a plan to turn Kessler hospital into a VA hospital. Here is the story as reported by NBC40:

HAMMONTON--- A group of elected officials are pitching the idea of turning the recently closed Kessler Memorial Hospital into a fully operational V.A. Hospital.

"...If you need full hospital care, you either have to go to Philadelphia or you have to go to Delaware, or you have to go to northern New Jersey," said Sen. Jeff Van Drew, who along with Assemblymen Nelson Albano and Matt Milam, signed a letter requesting an evaluation of Kessler as a location for a V.A. hospital.

That request letter was sent last week to the offices of U.S. Senators Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez, "....at the very least it is worth expanding the energy to try to make this happen, what do we have to lose, we don't have a Southern Jersey veterans hospital now."

Since closing its doors last month and laying off hundreds of employees, the Hammonton hospital has stood mostly vacant, with the exception of the E.R., which is now a satellite facility run by AtlantiCare, "....it would create jobs, it would create economic energy, it would help our veterans."

Van Drew said that his office has heard back from U.S. Sen. Menendez, who expressed interest in the idea.

We feel this would be an excellent use for this facility as long as a portion is maintained as an emergency room, as it is being utilized now. Hammonton can not be without this vital service.

This could be an excellent use of stimulus funding to re-create jobs for those who are now displaced from Kessler as well as the jobs that would come from the overall renovation of the facility.

You obviously did not read our post. We said that the emergency room must be maintained!!!!
The ER is essential to our community. If we lose the ER we will also lose lives!! It creates jobs and Atlanticare is already investing in much needed renovations and improvements to the facility. The ER also provides jobs in ancilliary services.

Just what we need ....blowhard Democrats that do not even represent Hammonton making decisions for us?

Van Drew, Albano and Milan (the handicap parking guy) imposing political spin and nonsense while throwing Hammonton under the bus.

Why didn't they lobbying Jon Corzine for some of the $44,000,000 million dollars in NJ state aid for our hospital? These democrats are so devious and deceitful while South Jersey gets the shaft.

Part of the problem is the way the districts are broken up here in NJ, we are excluded from the rest of the Atlantic County representation and lumped in with Ocean and Burlington Counties. Our location would make it much easier and a much shorter trip for the veterans from Cape May, Cumberland, Atlantic, and other counties. That is the areas these gentlemen represent.
I don't understand why you consider providing Hammonton with hundreds of jobs, potential customers, and an updated facility is throwing us under the bus. It seems this would help Hammonton in many ways.
This should be a bi-partisan effort and in that hope, I personally have sent a note to our Republican representatives asking them to look into this project.
As to lobbying Gov. Corzine, all he asked was for the hospital to provide a plan for the future as to how they would handle any investment and a plan for continued success. There was never a reply to the Gov and therefore there were no funds sent.

I really don't understand why you are so unwilling to work for the betterment of Hammonton. Why are you so against putting petty differences aside and thinking of the town first?
We are willing to think of the Town first and for that reason we will ignore your childish insults.

Kessler hospital had a VA wing in the hospital for 3 years.  We've really needed this. This is really great for all of South Jersey veterans. LoBiondo brought this to Kessler and it was a big help for veterans not having to go to Elsmere, DE or Philly for their healthcare.

This is great! The Dems are working for the ex kessler employees, and for the needs of all Hammontonians.  What a great combination a 1st class ER for us and a local VA Hoapital for thoughes who have given so much for their country.

I just read on the Republican blog that Marino was fired from his Police job, when he was falsifying police reports.  Is this true?

That seems a little extreme to say.  Marino regularly likes to point out that's a former police officer and shys away from saying what he currently does.  I just think he just must of decided he didn't want to be a police officer.   He must of reevaluated his life, thought of all the career options that someone in a professional career could strive for and he decided to fulfilll every child's dream of riding in trains all day long.

There's no guarantee that Atlanticare will stay at Kessler indefinitely anyway or least more than a year.  I think that there should be effort in seeing if the VA would like to build a totally new hospital in another location in Hammonton that will allow room for growth.  I think it would be nice to keep the "Kessler Campus" as an Emergency Room and possibly the other space can be used for other medical related services.

Marino is a good man and has the best interest of all Hammontonians, new and old. The personal attacks are really not necessary. Anthony I am with you all the way, do not listen to the "naysayers" who type personal attacks all day long.

Personal attacks are not necessary.  You have to realize that comments like these come from those who would love to see Republicans and Democrats attacking each other.  Marino runs a safe and soft campaign.  That in itself though will not get him elected as mayor.  We need to get fired up this election.  I personally am going to vote for Ingemi since he's a veteran and is extremely well educated.  When you measure who can actually lead. The obvious choice is a veteran military officer.

I personally think its fantastic that the Hammonton Democrats are writing rumors about other candidates.  No better way for a Democrat to win than by dirty tricks and rumor mongering.

Regardless if Marino is innocent or guilty of this slanderous rumor, you've now put it out there, and some people will believe what you wrote.

This is a shameful practice.

Dude, it's obvious that you're replying to yourself. You're posting the attacks on Marino and then crying foul against the Democrats.  Marino's a big boy. He doesn't need any defending.  Stick to the issues.  Marino is a non-issue as far as I'm concerned.  We need new leadership in Hammonton, the GOP is banking on Marino while the Dems are banking on Ingemi.  May the best man win.   Hopefully one of them will win.

You say it is a shameful practice, yet you do the exact same thing. You accuse the Democrats of writing those entries, but you don't know that to be true. You accuse the Democrats of dirty tricks and rumor mongering, yet that is exactly what you are doing.
What a huge hypocrite!!!!
