Details are sketchy, but Corp Joe Mazzeo who very recently retired from the Hammonton Police Department unexpectedly passed away today.
Joe leaves behind two sons. All of our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this trying time. As more details become available they will be posted here.

Wow, I did not know him but he looked like he was in great shape when I saw him last around town.. What a shock. He was younger than me. Thoughts are with his sons.

I blame Hammonton First for all the bad luck our police department has endured. They have put so much stress on our police dept. as well as all town employees. HF has a real hate for law enforcement and their greed is destroying our town and destroying people's lives. Hammonton First your evilness and lack of caring will only bring you closer to hell!

Then move out of Hammonton. We don't want you here. Most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. RIP Joe.

You're evidently HF that's why you can't handle the truth. I'm not evil so there is no reason for me to leave, but I am kindhearted enough to help you pack your bags.

It just goes to prove how clueless HF is about how people feel here in Hammonton.

I agree, HF has harassed our police dept long enough. It's time they stood up to HF and started causing them some stress and grief.  Start at the top by writing tickets to the mayor and deputy mayor for not wearing seat belts and then and all the rest for talking on their cell phones while driving. More importantly don't forget to arrest them for drinking and driving. Let them know what it's like to be without something you need.

This is Sam Mento III.
This type of stuff needs to stop.  This is a time for prayer and or reflection.  This type of rhetoric is what turns people off to politics.  I think it is time to end this thread.  Obviously, some people will use any tragedy as an oppurtunity to grind an axe.  You know who you are and so do I, so stop it.
Joe was a good guy.  I will miss seeing his friendly smile and wave at our four way stop sign.

Well said Sam.    This is for kind thoughts to the family and warm memories of Joe nothing else.   Save that for another time.    Joe you will be missed.    You were one of a kind and above all a fantastic father and friend to have in your corner when you needed one.   God Bless you Joe.

I am related to Joe and he was a great Dad and man. His wish was to retire a write a book about his life as a Hammonton cop. But could not do it while he still wanted his job. He had always tried to move up but was denied. I hope we do not have to hear that sob story that their leader puts on when one of his officers pass away. That the man who passed away was a friend and an employee. NEWSFLASH Joe did not care for his superiors. Also just before retirement he said if he did not make his surgery his neighbor on the corner would throw a big party. So for everyone who had something to say people were listening because you talk alot and loud, and look out your windows ALOT.

I have known Joe for many years and your right he was a great guy with a huge heart. What I have learned from living in this very jealous town all my life is that if you are well liked and good at what you do other Hammontonians will put you down because they don't want you to look better than them. Money and titles can get you some things but it can't buy you respect, brains or class (all of which Joe had) - I think we all know that. As far as the neighbor they too were just jealous because in this town people are afraid that you might have a dollar more than them. I have to say when people hear the news about Joe only nice words are said and people are very upset, saddened and heartbroken because he was just a great guy. So as all these people are quick to judge look in the mirror because on judgment day you probably will not see the gates. Joe's memory will live on in many peoples hearts and we know he is in a good place and that's all that matters!

When everyone else turned their back on our family during a crisis Joe was one of a small handful that knocked on our door and said I'm there for you whatever you need.    That day changed my opinion of Joe forever and I don't think he ever knew what that meant to my family.     I regret never getting the chance to tell him that.

Typical HF - accommodate the bad ones and harass the good ones! Remember - you can kick a dog just so many times and eventually he'll bite you back and hard.

What a disgrace! Don't these people care about anyone but themselves? That is so ignorant and disrespectful! But that's what we have come to expect from HF!

Do you think that when and or if speaking Joe's superiors can talk about professional acquaintances and true friends ? Joe knew what his superiors thought about him and he still always had a smile. It just gets old all the fake sympathy. From co-workers and neighbors who almost made him give up a second income that he used to send his kids to school. What will they look at now thru the curtains?

You have a right to be angry, I guess, but all this bitterness from beyond the grave is downright tacky and is the reason Hammonton is the way it is and will always be. Feuds passed down from family to family. Get over it and let the hate go. Be a better person.  Don't let the sons live their lives with bitterness.

Joe was my cousin I know my facts so does his children. Know your facts, Joe's superiors sympathy is fake and after you have the said the same thing3,4,5 times it gets old. No one hurt Joe like his neighbors and superiors.

I am sure Joe would not want the bitterness passed on. I am sure he always took the high road.  What is the point of your hate?  Celebrate the good life Joe had, do not dwell on the ugly aspect of it. It is not who he was. That's all.

WOW! You must work in town hall?  Joe was a great guy and so is his entire family. But to blame HF for his death is just plain crazy. I think you need to look to the Cheif of Police to see what is wrong with the police dept. And as far as town hall I don't see anyone being overworked there. It's a tough economy get over it

You must be a Firster it's obvious heart of stone. Maybe if HF didn't piss so much money away on THEIR PROJECTS our police department would be able to function. I guess it was the Chief that denied sick time to an officer who had cancer? NOT! Describing your character or lack of one is just a waste of time. Most people dislike HF anyway that's why everyone is questioning how you got elected!

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Mayor and Council that have to vote on whether or not a town employee gets promoted? So if there are under worked people in town hall then why does Mayor and Council keep them there and keep promoting them? Wouldn't it be logical to keep and promote the hard working smart employees? How does Mayor and Council base their decisions on town employees... their last names, their financial status, if they cover and protect M &C's mistakes, if they support HF or not? It would be interesting for HF to answer the above questions since what they have been doing bears no logical explanation!!!!!

How can anyone make a negative comment about a fellow citizen before he is even buried?
1st things first.. this great man would have passed on any town council's watch.
The autopsy isn't even released on the day I type this.
The negative comments for Cpl. Joseph Mazzeo is totally in vain. the poster must have had a previous issue with him.
Get the fact straight... then get your common sense straight... not sure which one should come first as you are lacking both.
He served his community.
