Hammonton School District moving towards a new budget.

The Administrators in the Hammonton schoold district have agreed to a wage freeze. A report on the Press of Atlantic City website reports this will save the school district about $85,000. The report said."The school district's administration - including its superintendent, assistant superintendent, eight principals and vice principals, and seven supervisors - took the first step by agreeing to wage freezes for the upcoming school year."
Now we wait and see if the teachers and other staff are willing to step up to the plate and make some kind of agreement. Loretta Rehmann, school board President,  said district workers represented by the Hammonton Education Association - including teachers, secretaries, custodial staff, maintenance workers and instructional aides - met Monday afternoon to discuss possible cuts of their own.
The Press reported other possible and planned cuts for the upcoming year. "There are a lot of other things on the table," Rehmann said of services that could be cut to save money. "We'll have (possible) cuts to stipend positions, no middle school sports, freshman sports are gone, and we'll be turning out the lights - no Friday night football games. We're serious about this stuff."

The school district plans to unveil its final plan at its March 29 budget meeting, Rehmann said.

They should do what the town did and cut their pays by 10%. Other schools are laying off, privatizing certain depts, closing schools, cutting after school programs and the best one of all cutting out the Spanish classes. This country could save billions a year if they didn't need to print and translate everything into Spanish. If our president can force us to buy health care why can't he force immigrants to speak English to save taxpayer money?

About 3 years ago I watched the school board meeting use the threat of outsourcing the maintenance workers as a ruse to get those employees in shape. The acting by the school board members was horrible. Of course, the teachers (who should be ashamed of their performance) got up and spoke about "outsiders and strangers having access to your children and grandchildren" or some such crap.  Had the board outscourced  the cafeteria, maintenance, custodial and bus deparments, they probably would not have to propose such drastic cuts. They would have saved an awful lot in salary and benefit dollars. That is a fact.  I guess those teachers are unaware that each September they are confronted with classrooms full of "outsiders and strangers".I hope they will happily accept their choice.

The teachers only care about themselves. They don't want to take a cut in pay they would rather see the low paid employees lose their jobs because it won't affect them. All these years they bragged about how much time off they get and how much money they make well now it finally has caught up to them. They only work 180 days a year, every holiday and summer off, some of those days are half days. We spend all that money on teacher conventions and the teachers don't go they go on vacation instead. Their starting salaries are what most taxpayers make in a year if they are lucky and work 52 weeks 50 hours a week or more. Everyone wanted a change when they voted for Christie - well they are getting it now.

Other districts are closing school, laying off administrators, outsourcing, doing away with the world language classes which are not mandated by the state, my question is why is Hammonton only targeting teachers? Why just freeze their salaries when so many taxpayers are struggling, why not ask them to take a pay cut? Why can't we do any with ECEC, and the free breakfast program? Re-evaluate the free lunch program and do away with the world language classes? There are many things that can be cut in order not to deny the children of the taxpayers a good education.

The school board will also be slashing the milk budget for the preschool kids in an all out effort to cut the 44 million dollar school budget. The heat will also be shut off on the 3rd graders during this winter season this year.

These two drastic cost cutting changes will net the school, $2707.80, in costs savings for the 2010 - 2011 school year.

The proposal to cut the salaries and benefits to the employees of the school district across the board by 10% would save $4,107,400 per year. This simple proposal was immediately tabled for lack of a second motion.

It looks like we will going thru the same old silly ritual...... the school board proposing to cut the items the parents will react to the most. Tired old game being played by the school board, stop giving out overly generous 5% pay raises every year.

You are wrong . This school board will keep its promise of no tax increase. Also why don't the NJEA work with board instead of against them. It is clear that the other groups in the school have..

With everyone losing their jobs you would think the people at the school would be thankful to have a job and health care coverage. I guess not! Oh well then start laying off including all the family members and friends of the board members. When they lose their jobs then maybe they will appreciate what they had!
