Council candidate Jim Mac Lane addresses council and writes Letter to the Editor concerning Hammonton Airport

I spoke at the most recent Town Council Meeting about the need to make the Airport Committee a permanent committee.  As a Democratic Candidate for Council, I thought I would elaborate on why the Hammonton Democrats feel this action is vital and have made it part of the 2008 Promise of the Future Platform.

Hammontons greatest asset (second only to its citizens) is its location.  We are located in the middle of a major technology hub that stretches from the University of Delaware to the Camden Waterfront to the Ft. Dix-McGuire-Lakehurst Mega-base and includes RowanUniversity and Stockton State College.  Additionally, Hammonton finds itself astride major roadways (the Atlantic City Expressway and 206-Route 54) and we have our own airport and a train station. Hammonton must leverage this geographic advantage and transportation assets to attract large, sustainable businesses that will provide tax revenue and high-paying private sector jobs.

The Hammonton Democrats feel that the Airport Committee is the proper organization for this task.  The Committee could continuously evaluate all of our transportation assets.  The committee could make annual recommendations to the Council on how to use these assets to make Hammonton more attractive to industry.

Someone mentioned that the Airport Committee is already a committee.  However, the Airport is actually an Ad Hoc Committee like most of our recently created Mayors Committees.  Such committees lack permanence since they serve at the pleasure of the Mayor.  These committees were meant to help solve one-time problems.

By making the Airport Committee permanent, members would have to be approved by the entire Town Council. Additionally, members of permanent committees serve set terms.  Thus, permanent committees are freer to provide independent, non-partisan opinions.

The Hammonton Democrats hope that the Town Council will take action immediately.  The Town Council should make the Airport Committee permanent with a mandate to evaluate our transportation resources.  The Council should be tri-partisan and appoint members of the Hammonton Democratic Party, the Regular Republican Party and the Firster Party.

The Airport Committee issue is not about the election.  It is about what is best for all of Hammonton.  The Hammonton Democrats hope that the other parties will join us in this endeavor.

The airport committee should be a permanent committee.  The airport is very important to the future of Hammonton.  Good forward thinking Jim.

This is an important year for the Dems.  The Republicans are fighting now that Frank D told everyone that if they showed up at the the young Republican's fund raiser there would be consequences.  They have pitiful candidates and are in turmoil.
