Dems want more open budgeting by county

By THOMAS BARLAS Staff Writer, 609-272-7201
(Published: Saturday, April 04, 2009)
Democratic Atlantic County freeholder candidates want to change the way the county budget is presented to the public.
Angelo DeMaio, John Devlin and Sam Mento say they want to make the annual budget process more transparent for Atlantic County residents.
The three candidates say they want to:
Post the budget on the county Web site as soon as the document is presented by the county executive.
Hold at least three public hearings throughout the county so residents can ask questions and give ideas for budget savings.
Require the budget document to include detailed descriptions of what the line items are intended to fund.
"This is the beginning of many constructive ideas that our ticket plans to offer," DeMaio said. "As we stated in our announcement, Atlantic County residents want fresh ideas and solutions to meet the challenges of today's difficult economic times."
"Our plan for transparency in the budget process would allow for greater public input and exchange of ideas," Devlin said. "The taxpayers deserve to know that every effort is made to consider other potential cuts and ideas for stretching their money."
"Other counties have even gone to their employees who administer county programs to collect input on cost savings and efficiencies," Mento said. "We should welcome the input of employees who intricately know the programs they oversee, as well as that of the general public, and make this a prominent part of the budget process."
Atlantic County's budget was approved 8-1 by the Board of Chosen Freeholders on Tuesday. Republicans hold a 6-3 majority on the board.
DeMaio is running for an at-large seat, which is contested countywide. Devlin is seeking the 2nd District seat, which represents Ventnor, Margate, Longport, Somers Point and parts of Atlantic City and Egg Harbor Township. Mento is running for the for 5th District seat, which represents Buena, Buena Vista Township, Corbin City, Egg Harbor City, Estell Manor, Folsom, Hammonton, Mullica Township and parts of Hamilton Township.

Why did John Devlin, the Atlantic City police officer and Atlantic City school board member vote to ABSTAIN on the largest tax increase in Atlantic City School District history? The final vote was 6 to 5 with one elected school board member ABSTAINING. Devlin (who ABSTAINED) was quoted as saying "he could not vote for a school budget with such a large tax increase" but he did not vote "NO" to the tax increases but he decide to ABSTAIN and allowed the budget to pass with the huge tax increase???

Why did he ABSTAIN and let this large tax increase pass? Do all of the freeholder candidates agree with ABSTAINING on a tough budget vote? Is this the open budget process you are talking about? Please ask Mr. Devlin why he abstained and allowed this large tax increase?

This vote took place last week and shows that John Devlin will another puppet if elected?

It's fine for the invisible man to be in the barrell. He doesn't do anything unless its an election anyway.... he pushed out his enemies at the GOP only because he knew they were not supporting him.

I guess Sam Mento is against Alisa Cooper, she voted for the budget.

I do not think you are correct. Devlin is the school board member who voted to abstain. It was Damaio who is on the   school board and I was told he did not abstain because he was in favor of the school budget passing. He voted yes for the school children.

Some of our proposals will include reforming the tax abatement program for businesses to lure larger companies that can provide high-paying jobs. We will build public-private partnerships to provide training so that our workforce will have the skills necessary to compete in the 21st century. We will work with healthcare providers and the federal and state government to ensure that ultimately every citizen has a digital personal healthcare record. We will participate in innovative energy programs to implement smart grid technology to not only save the environment but also save us money. Finally, we will never forget the basic understanding of local government and therefore, we will work to keep taxes low, reduce debt and restore basic services.

JOE INGEMI FOR MAYOR
MIKE AMMIRATO, JIM SCARPATO, AND CARMEN VILLANI FOR TOWN COUNCIL

So the Fire Department must have been busy last night.  However their new piece ala 425k was sitting inside.

Guess they did not want to get it dirty.

1 425k fire truck = 13 police cars

Here is the real link to the story

It seems a very common mistake by most bowling alleys in the state.

Looks like the state wants to shutdown the bowling alleys in New Jersey. I have an idea how about they fire all the state employees that wasted the time and effort to investigate this so called problem. What a waste of taxpayer money on small jackpot bowling money.

Look at how this state operates, Corzine probably wants to grab up all this money so he can hand out more to his North Jersey political hacks.......What a sad joke.

Why would anyone want to start a private business in NEW JERSEY only to be constantly harressed by these state agencies. Corzine should dry up and go away......these bowling alleys have been providing this small town fun for 100 years.

Curcio has some explaining to do.  He sat back and let Kessler die as his brother in law was circling like a buzzard over our hospital.  It is amazing how Jim and Don swooped in once the Hospital died.  Maybe a little effort on Jimmy's end and it could have survived.  Why would he do that, he is a political hack who puts his personsal gain before the people he should be serving.  The way I see it he and his brother took our hospital for the mere cost of 500 jobs, and the rape of a luxury to the town of Hammonton.

The Republicans even have Maria Brita running for them.  I guess Curcio gave her Kool Aid to drink.  He did nothing to save Kessler.  Isn't it interesting his brother in law is an executive with AtlanticCare?

Yes - this was a 14 month investigation headed by 12 of the best state lawyers and 62 state troopers. This crazy gambling by these bowlers is bankrupting the state of New Jersey. BTW, did I tell you that this is illegal. They will next tackle the illegal poker games at the local senior citizen halls and the VFW's.

What a bunch of overpaid idiots led by an incompetent thieving governor!!!!

Seems a little crazy for Corzine and the Democrats to go after league bowlers in an election year for something as silly as having a 50-50 for their league.  Most league bowlers are regular hard working men and women.

No wonder the whole matter was already dropped statewide now that they saw have stupid this was.  Maybe it was just a crazy political stunt that blew up in the Democrats' faces.
