The Pedestrian Danger Index (PDI) is a measure of the relative risk of walking, adjusted for exposure. It is calculated by dividing the average pedestrian fatality rate (2007-2008), by the percentage of residents walking to work (2000). Metropolitan areas are organized within each state from the safest to the least safe places according to their PDI for 2007-2008; the safest places for walking are those with lower PDI.

Over the last several decades, most of the business of daily life has shifted from Main Streets to state highways that have grown wider and wider over time. These arterial roads, as they are called, have drawn shopping centers, drive-throughs, apartment complexes and office parks. However, the pressure to move as many cars through these areas as quickly as possible has led transportation departments to squeeze in as many lanes as they can, while designing out sidewalks, crosswalks and crossing signals, on-street parking, and even street trees in order to remove impediments to speeding traffic.

As a result, more than half of fatal vehicle crashes occurred on these wide, high capacity and high-speed thoroughfares. Though dangerous, these arterials are all but unavoidable because they are the trunk lines carrying most local traffic and supporting nearly all the commercial activity essential to daily life. These roads have an enormous impact on residential neighborhoods, as well: For example, a recent AARP poll of adults 50 years and older found that 40 percent reported inadequate sidewalks in their neighborhoods and nearly half of respondents reported that they could not safely cross the main roads close to their home.

Silly Admin,

The Solution is easy...let HF buy up more property than they'll have Town Council fix up the sidewalks in front of those properties.  But HF must own the property first before Town council will act.

You are so right. They only spend our tax dollars to fix up their properties not ours and it's our money. Since the taxpayers have to foot the 4 million dollar bill to bring Stockton to Hammonton because they can't see it's more cost effective to use one of the public schools...what will the taxpayers get in return for this? Cut services, no trash pick up, no roads paved, no snow removal, town equipment not maintained, still no parking near town. The taxpayers of Hammonton never get anything for our money but all they preach is that no tax increase in 4 years but we are still paying taxes!

What's this BS on the town's website? We have to support our local businesses. Why cause HFer's own the buildings? Honest government? Ha I guess that explains the pinocchio syndrome every time they lie they get bigger. Hammonton is like a family what a family of cut throats, back stabbers, thieves and people you can't trust. I was always told the only people you could ever trust is your family. I think our new mayor od'ed on the coolaid before writing that statement.

the only local businesses they want you to support are those in their buildings. I don't think they care too much about any of the others.Anyway, how much coffee can you drink or pizza can you eat? How many hair salons or spas do we need? Are we that vain (lol).  The choices are not exactly diverse. What happened to the candle lady?

Eww now there is a candy store there. Are they selling chocolate covered bugs or mouse terds? You would think the board of health would shut these places down since they are roach and rodent infested. I won't eat anywhere down town because of that - you never know when you're gonna bite into something that you shouldn't be biting into. I'm gonna barf!

It is odd that they would relocate from a bustling new downtown that is always promoted  in the papers to an out-of-the-way location. I pass it all the time and didn't know they were there. Doesn't make sense because it is no longer convenient to downtown foot traffic anymore.

Since no one shops downtown, getting away from downtown probably helped their business. Plus there is no parking downtown and never will be. Although maybe when the taxpayers pay 4 million for Stockton maybe they will have the taxpayers throw in a few parking lots for the empty downtown businesses. I can't figure out how these businesses are staying open since they have no customers.

If the economy is so bad every where but Hammonton then why does this mayor want to bring Stockton to Hammonton? How many Hammonton people are looking to go to Stockton? Why don't they poll the residents to see who really wants Stockton to come here since no one in the surrounding communities can afford it.

it is simple. they are trying to turn their downtown into a college town. like up north in rutgers, etc. All the small town shops, restaurants, stores that all the college kids spend money in. They will spend money in all the stores rented by him and they will also work in those stores, restaurants, while going to stockton up the street. They want to turn that area of bellevue into a hangout that is why they wanted stockton there. They certainly did not benefit from a college education, that's for sure. they bought/sold land and bought/sold/rented buildings and that is how they got wealthy. Not a bad way to do it and if you can do it in today's world, go for it. And who owns all those buildings?  Or whose friends own all those buldings? you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure it out. by the way, what happened to the money they received for the Little Italy fiasco? I think they paid the bills with it. that is why no one is opening up stores in that area. It just quietly went away.

Well at the risk of sounding bitter (who me?) those businesses on the one side of Bellevue are all owned by people who have money. We all know who they are and that is just a fact. If I had family money or a wealthy spouse, I would probably do the same thing. There is no urgency to any of these businesses because if they do close, these people will not go hungry or lose (one of) their house or have to live in their (Hummers) cars. In other words, these little shops are not supporting the family or paying the bills, except maybe for one salon there. Think about it. where were some of these people before the big Downtown renewal?

Your right there is no way these people could make a living off of these businesses. However there comes a time when you realize why keep losing money when you can make money. The eateries downtown are just so boring just your everyday food. Our downtown advocate needs to go to Cherry Hill, New York or somewhere to bring something good back to this town. I think a food kitchen downtown would be great since we have so many less fortunate people. I'm sure they have the vegetables all they need is volunteers and I'm sure that won't be a problem either.

Before spending millions of our hard earned tax dollars to bring Stockton here. The only fair thing to do would be to put it on the ballot in the form of a referendum. The only question would be will they tamper with the machines again?

The moment that Stockton opened up in a private school instead of benefitting our public schools, it made me realize that this is all about making money for a few certain people instead of benefitting our public schools and allow a means of revenue for our public schools.

Is it me or is Old Forks Road getting darker?  I have to drive from the Pike down past the high school and I can't see anything.  Can't the town put up street lights? I missed my turn.
