MAYS LANDING -- A previously convicted sex offender will likely serve the rest of his life in prison after pleading guilty to attempting to carjack a young mother and her baby.

George Burleigh, 61, of Mullica Township, was sentenced to a total of 26.5 years in prison for the July 11 attempt.

Jessica Timbal, 23, was outside her car in the parking lot of the Super Fresh on the White Horse Pike, when Burleigh came up behind her, covered her mouth and pressed a knife to her midsection.

Timbal refused Burleigh's order to get into the car, where her 8-month-old child was strapped in. Timbal's refusal eventually caused Burleigh to flee. He was found in nearby woods, lying on his back.

Police recovered the knife, and Burleigh admitted to what he did.

A tote bag was also recovered with plastic gloves, rope and string.

"God only knows what would have happened,' Superior Court Judge Michael Donio said.

This happened right here in town and yet our council continues to cut our police force. Three officers were not replaced last year and rumors abound that more will be cut to meet this years budget.

HF is so used to breaking the law and getting away with it that they feel a police officer serves no purpose. What they don't realize is that the average or below average citizen who breaks the law actually gets charges on his/her record and either has to pay a fine or go to jail. Think about it: what happened to the person who stole $200,000. worth of airport dirt, what happened to the person who stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from his family owned business?

HF hates the law.  Why do you think they hate the Police?

I think you can hire another 240 cops and you are not going to stop every crime that possibly can be committed.

Thank God this criminal was put behind bars.

Donio is the best judge in the state of New Jersey. Who cares what political party he supports.

White collar crimes are committed more often than violent crimes. An example of a white collar crime is embezzling money from a business or organization - these crimes are mostly committed by the wealthy which means, no press coverage, no record, no fine it just gets dissolved WHY? because they are rich businesses people and can afford to pay for their freedom. What makes this judge the best because he is doing his job? This is one case where he did the right thing you would need to review all his cases in order to be able to make a fair conclusion on whether or not he is the best judge.

In the whole state?  That is a pushing it a little don't you think?  I Don't know Donio either way so why do you say that? Fill me in. Can you point to specifics please? What are his credentials other than being a Donio? I guess You are transfixed by the last name. What judge in the state other than the locals do you even know?  People like you contribute to the B/S that is alive and well in Hammonton and will never go away so stop complaining about people hiring their family members for jobs because idiots like you only look at last names.  You people will never change because you are too ignorant to change. Believe me, everything in Hammonton is not the "Best" and if you ever went anywhere else you would see you are just like everyone else, good, bad and ugly.

You are sooo right! Just think if Hammonton people got hired based on their abilities and intelligence only a handful of people would have a job. Instead in Hammonton your qualifications are based on your last name, who you are related to and who you sleep with. What makes me laugh is that these people are paid high salaries and walk around as if they were really somebody and look down on others. That's why in this town if you are really smart and/or very athletic they put you down and discourage you because they don't want you to look or be better then them. Shallow very shallow!

Since no new thread on the county cut-backs going off the subject here. Dennis Levinson has announced layoffs and furloughs for county employees. However part time Freeholders are paid a salary of $20,000. a year plus health care benefits package which is believed to cost $15,000. for each Freeholder. This does not include their expense accounts or pension contributions etc. The point I want to make is that these part time freeholders are making the yearly salary of many struggling Americans and why are we paying for their health care and pensions when it's only a part time position? How many hours a week do they work?  I'll be surprised if it's more than 10 hours a week. Levinson also stated the budget cuts will affect our senior citizens, and low-income families why not the rich? Now I know why everyone wants to be a politician. You can make more money being a politician than working and only have to work a few hours a week. Now we know where all our money is going......
