Hammonton Gazette needs to check its facts.....

When I read this editorial in the Gazette (http://www.hammontongazette.com/Opinion/editorials.html), the snow started to melt and the flowers bloomed and I thought all is good here in the blueberry capital.  But as tears filled my eyes, I noticed this statement

"Its a venue most communities would love to call their own and one that operates without taxpayer dollars."

That is incorrect!!!!  The Eagle Theater pays no property taxes because it is a not-for-profit.  So actually, every taxpayer in Hammonton helps subsidize the Eagle Theater. This information was taken from the AC Press's database of properties that don't pay taxes. Here is the entry:

Atlantic CountyHAMMONTON TOWNChurch/Charitable0281100002208 VINE ST0.28HAMMONTON REVITALIZATION CORP

As you can see, the Eagle Theater is owned by the Hammonton Revitalization Corp., parent organization of MainStreet Hammonton.  According to its tax returns, the HRC received $86K in government contributions (though not for the Eagle Theater).

You can see the tax returns of the HRC from 2001-2007 (http://nccsdataweb.urban.org/PubApps/showVals.php?ft=bmf&ein=222583099).  The Eagle Theater is discussed in the 2007 Tax Return.

Bottom Line:  Enjoy the Theater, you already support it!!!

Just which the Gazette would have been more forthcoming about that point

Why do people here think every other community is looking at Hammonton with envy? I have never heard anyone talk about Hammonton other than they think it is down near Atlantic City. That is it. No blueberries, no football, no millionaires or italians, just that it is farm land.

Also, if you pay federal or state or county taxes, as well as local taxes, you fund Hammonton.  The whole country funds Hammonton therefore it is not all "ours." Hammonton is a town on welfare, supported not by the locals, but by the taxpayers of America. That Canoe Club belongs to the taxpayers, not the locals. We paid for it.

Our schools are funded at the poverty level. It is embarrassing.

Only Hammonton First talks like this because they are trying to take credit for all the Italian immigrants who settles here 100 years ago and all the blueberry farms that have been here for over 100 years etc. They are proud of using our money to create projects that only benefit themselves. No one ever uses the Canoe Club it's just an office for our Recreation Director. Nice office at 1.5 million Huh? These delusional people live in a bubble they don't know how the rest of the world lives so they have nothing to compare us to. When you travel there are so many places nicer than Hammonton. If fact all I hear is people trashing us and even the new comers who moved here are sorry. We are known as the rich little brats that are on drugs and steroids and pump iron all day and spend daddy's money. We are referred to as the stupid rich people who are in love with themselves and think we are better than everyone else. Not such a good reputation to have. That's nothing to be proud of.

Since the taxpayers paid and own the Eagle Theater I think we should turn it into either a homeless shelter or a soup kitchen. That way it will benefit more than a handful of people. This town needs to do more for the poor.

This newspaper if you want to call it that, never lets the facts get in its way.We all find it funny that change orders are being voted on 7 months after the building opened up. Why did Steve and the new council members vote on it when they were not even there when the project was being done. The people need to understand they are going to pay plenty for their mistakes. The paper won't report it... one could guess it never took place?
Why did't they tell us what the change orders were? why didn't the duo from the no news gazette ask who ordered them? why did barbario vote no when it was his project? when will the truth come out??? where did the extra funding for change orders come from? were these change orders done before they were approved??
We will be watching, this will be the beginning of the end for several as it relates to this issue. so many questions so little answers from this "open government"

That rag can't report it because it's the truth! They won't go into detail about anything. Notice when the clerk reads the bill list it's taken as a group not one by one cause they don't want the people to know what they are paying for. The funding came from where all the funding came from...the taxpayers. The change orders were done before they were approved just like the building was torn down before they got the permit from the pinelands. You haven't realized yet that laws don't apply to them? Did the Gazette ever print the total cost of town hall NO how about how much it's going to cost taxpayers for Stockton to come here NO. The paper of record is only what they want you to know and what they want to make up to harass people they don't like.
