Website review: Hammonton's "open" government not so "open."

In a report by the Press of Atlantic City, county websites were reviewed for information provided to the public. Hunterdon County came out on top as the best county website in NJ. Atlantic County was in the top half of the rankings.

The article started by debunking the myth that it is too costly or time consuming to provide the public with this infomation. In fact the study showed that it was cheaper to just provide the info online than to pay employees to look up and provide requested information to the public. "It doesn't cost us anything to make stuff available to the public," said Freeholder George Melick. "Once you've got the people and the equipment, it doesn't cost anything more to do it right."

A few examples of the information the study looked at, and whether evaluators found it on the Web sites of Hunterdon, Ocean, Cape May, Atlantic and Cumberland counties:

- Freeholders' financial disclosure records: Provided only by Cape May County (not provided on Hammonton website)

- Collective bargaining agreements: Provided only by Atlantic and Hunterdon counties (not provided by Hammonton)

- Annual audit report: Provided only by Hunterdon County (not provided by Hammonton)

It is time for the "open" government of Hammonton to move into the 21st century and make a true commiment to providing our public with the information they want and deserve.

Doesn't the town employ a computer person? If so why isn't that person updating the town's website? I find it amazing how so many people in our community have damaged property and flooding in their basements, every where you go to see hoses out by the street draining out the water. Yet our elected officials and our emergency management people never made an announcement, put anything in the papers, nothing on the town's website etc. Just goes to show how much they really care about the people of this community - they don't. People need to wake the hell up. I'm afraid to see what would really happen if we had a true emergency in this town.

The Town website is very static.  The website seems to be only updated near election time each year.  Compared to some other towns even in our county, the Town website gets a C-.

Someone should also look into why the Hammonton Lake water level was raised up two feet. They raised the water level in the lake too, instead of dropping it like they normally do during the winter. DO YOU THINK THIS HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE FLOODED BASEMENTS IN TOWN. But thats okay, I will have a lake view when the foundations of the houses closest to the lake start to crack. Take a look too at your property values, they are dropping fast. Everything is fine in Hammonton, everything is fine. I bet the person who authorized the raising of the lake will not step forward, maybe it was for a resident who wanted the water higher for his dock on his lakefront property.

I could care less what happens to the lakefront properties because they are all HF. As far as our property values dropping then why aren't our taxes being lowered???? Let HF answer that one!
